Summer Holidays are almost here and although they’re not quite as exciting as when I was still in school, this time of year still conjures up images of the beach – girls in bikinis, ice-cream cones, surfers, drinking pimms and lemonade in the garden and more.
I used to be a huge Enid Blyton fan, I couldn’t get enough and I still love the idea of a typical British seaside holiday in the early 20th century. Back then there were no ipods or TV, children played with a bucket and spade, they drank lemonade and ginger beer and spent time exploring the coastline. Parents would sit on their deckchairs, do some acrobatics or go for a paddle in a bathing carriage. While I do like all the modern day conveniences, I still think they’ve taken a lot away from family holidays.
These are some of my fav pics from the Life magazine archive. The last image is of my great-great grandfather and his friend on South Beach and my great-grandfather on shore leave in Durbs.
