Whimsical Wednesday: Balloons

I love balloons. No matter where I see them, they conjure up images of a bygone era where balloon sellers roamed the streets, traveling carnivals were plentiful and life was good. Of course that’s probably only true in the movies. I imagine life was pretty awful back then and a simple balloon was probably the highlight of a child’s year.  In any case these pictures made me smile. Hope they have the same effect on you.

Camera Bags for Women

I’m in the market for a new camera bag, one that wouldn’t normally be used by a middle-aged man wearing one of those vests. You know… the ones that make them look like fisherman instead of photographers.

No girl wants to run around town with a hideous nylon backpack, we don’t really want to wrap our cameras in towels and carry them in our handbags either. I’ve spent the past two days researching and I’ve come up with my favourite 3 brands of camera bags for women.

They are in order:

1. Epiphanie Bags – from $164.99

Epiphanie bags are a stylish and functional way to transport your camera every where you go. They currently have five styles!  Their goal is to create bags that truly offer solutions, WITHOUT sacrificing style. My personal favourites are the Clover in turquoise and the Lola in red.

2. Jo Totes – from $87

Jo Totes provide ladylike bags for women to safely carry their cameras and a lens or two on a daily basis, at photo shoots, and while traveling.

The padded interior can be custom fitted not only to protect a camera and lenses, but also to accommodate and organize items like a wallet, music, phone, keys, cosmetics and more.  Padding is sewn directly into the interior lining on all four sides and the bottom of the bags. The bottom is also equipped with four metal feet to guard your bag from rough, dirty, or damp surfaces. Inside of each Jo Tote are removable pads which are completely customizable—you can use as many or as few pads as you wish, arranged in the way that best suits your camera, lenses, and other items. Each bag also includes pockets, strong and comfortable shoulder straps, a top-zippered closure, and a removable cross-body strap.

I’m in love with the Rose – Moss bag. Just waiting for it to come back into stock so I can snap one up.( The tip off for these beauties came from Lauren @ Glossary.)

3. Kelly Moore - from $199.99

Kelly Moore is a photographer from Louisiana with her own line of fab camera bags. In her own words:

“I wanted to encourage the photographers out there and give them a bag where they can change a lens at a moment’s notice without feeling the pressure of having the client wait. Trust me…I’ve been there. I want you to feel the freedom of focusing on your craft and also give you more options. I wanted to give my clients “moore”. My mission is for you to walk away having more function, more style and of course more fun!”

If you are wanting to purchase a bag from one of these online stores, please remember that you will need to pay customs duties which are roughly 30% of the value as well as tax on those duties. Happy stylish snapping ladies!

Colour Block Your Face

The recently returned colour blocking trend isn’t only for your clothing and apparel. Mix it up with pastels and brights.

Red and peach, coral and fuchsia, orange and plum – the colour combos are infinite but the easiest place to start is with your eyes. Violets, greens and pale blues all feature in this season’s colour palette.

I especially like the bright eyeshadow and the nude lips although the super rosy-cheeked look is also fab. If you’re not super adventurous try colour blocking your nails instead.
Just don’t overdo it. Pricilla, Queen of the desert isn’t a good look on anyone.

Kitchen Confidential

Of all the rooms in a home, I love the kitchen the best. Not my kitchen of course, it’s tiny with barely enough room to swing a cat. We’re looking at buying a flat and I’m highly disappointed in the allocation of space and the general layout of a lot of them.

There was a fabulous 120m2 flat on Marriot road, but for R975 000 it still needs a lot of work and money  to reach its true potential. I’m not sure anything was done to the kitchen since the day it was built. It reminded me of one of those farmhouse kitchens in the free state. Old school tiles on the wall, lots of freestanding wooden cabinets, dark floor – I’m sure you know the type.

In any case, one thing I’ve always wanted is a medium to large kitchen with an island in the centre. It needs to ooze character while being as functional as it can be. The kind of kitchen featured in magazines with family and friends sprawled everywhere. Of course these thing cost money, and it helps if they have a fantastic house to go with it but a girl can dream can’t she.

Above is a selection of my favourite white kitchens on Elle Decor. My post title is a not so subtle nod to the TV programme starring Bradley Cooper before he was famous. It died a death after 13 episodes.

Talent Comes in Small Packages

I strongly believe that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything. Having said that, however, it doesn’t always mean you will do it well. Sometimes it takes an innate talent to truly shine.

A friend of mine recently asked me to quote him on a new website. Being a photographer, he gathered some sites he really liked and headed over. One of those sites was Lara Jade Photography, and I can honestly say I’m in awe of this girls work. Lara was born in 1989 and since picking up a camera at the age of 15, she clearly hasn’t looked back. At only seventeen she started her own business and has since become the youngest photographer to shoot at the world famous Spring Studios to date.

She currently works worldwide alongside leading agencies in both London and Milan and was also the winner of the Public Choice Award at the 2009 AOP Open Awards.

If you have an amazing knack for something, don’t waste it. You’re never too young to be successful!
