The Thrift Collection Is Turning One

Those of you who frequent the I Heart Market in Durban will know all about The Thrift Collection, which is soon to be turning one. As with any big occasion, they’re having a party. If that isn’t good enough for you, they will also be unveiling their new store.

The entire concept behind The Thrift Collection is sourcing previously-loved clothing and goods and selling it to the public at ridiculously low prices. Generally on a market day, if you get there early enough, you will find something worth buying. With this new store comes a much greater opportunity for you to find better quality items more often.

Having said all that I expect you to all be at the Alliance Francaise, fighting over all the goodies on Saturday, 27 August. On top of all this the Fat Croissant is in the same building so if you haven’t tried Tim’s food yet, now’s your chance.

Please spread the word and we’ll hopefully see you there.

Mikael Jansson

Mikael Jansson is a Swedish fashion and celebrity photographer. He has shot campaigns for clients such as DKNY, Dior and Calvin Klein. He also shoots fashion editorials for Vogue and Interview magazine. View his Portfolio on WilsonWenzel.com

What I like about his work is his ability to catch the raw sex appeal of his models. I particularly like the Zac Efron image as well as the Interview / Let’s Get Lost editorial pic at the bottom of this post.

All images used remain copyright of Mikael Jansson and WilsonWenzel.  From the top: Amanda Seyfried, Rihanna, Marion Cotillard, Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Zac Efron, Interview / Face of Luxury 2011, Ferragamo and Interview / Let’s Get Lost. Post image is Marion Cotillard for Miss Dior.

There And Back Again

This morning my other half decided it would be a good idea to drag me all the way to Tinley Manor to see what Palm Lakes was like. Let’s just say that I’m not a fan of natural South African flora. The bush just has too many snakes and I’ve never wanted to live in an area surrounded by long grass. I am also not a fan of the architectural style they’ve got going on. Each one to their own I guess and I wish all who live there a happy life, I just won’t be joining them.

On our way home we stopped at the Litchi Orchard which is a family owned and run litchi farm and venue located on Seaforth Avenue, Umhlali. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month they host a food market from 8am – 1pm. We haven’t managed to make it to one yet but from what I’ve heard it’s well worth it.  Also on site is a café offering a small selection of healthy, light meals and a variety of drinks. I saw a sign advertising picnics and Sunday lunch so that could also be something to consider for next time.

If anyone has visited on a market day or tried one of their picnics or other meals let me know. Any place that stocks Brewers & Union must be fantastic.

Busy Sunday

Sundays are normally very quiet for us. We tend to lounge around the flat for a good long while before venturing out into the world. Today, however, was a bit different. Last night we made plans to meet some friends for breakfast at Hemingways in Glenwood. There is an awesome special on at the moment where for just R24 you get 2 large Flapjacks with pecan nuts drizzled in honey and fresh cream AND a cappuccino.  Needless to say, I’m a pig, so I ate breakfast and had the flapjacks for dessert.

The East Coast Radio House and Garden Show is currently on at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Within that is the Homegrown Fair, which is filled with locally sourced crafts, food and design. Due to the rather steep price of R60 entrance this year, we thought we’d have to give it a miss, but thanks to Nadia from Cupcake Couture we got in for free. I’ve been wanting to check out her husband Daniel’s custom made furniture (Woodnewz) for a while now, so I’m really stoked. I’m totally in love with his new-made, retro-style designs. The quality and finishing is superb and I am definitely going to have to get some bedside pedestals. Mad Men eat your heart out.

On top of the free tickets, Nadia also surprised me with an awesome little notebook (I love free stuff). I also bought myself the latest Frankie Magazine and the Frankie Afternoon Tea recipe book. All I can say is, FINALLY!

If you manage to get yourself down to the show (it’s on till 3 July) make sure to visit Nadia and Daniel and spend some time in the Homegrown Fair. Some of my other favourites within the section include: Mooi, Whimsy and iKhaya.

Passion Is Everything

People who are super good at their chosen careers literally eat, sleep and breathe what they do. It’s impossible to put effort into something if you don’t love it. One person who definitely doesn’t have this problem is Ché Hooper of Portfolio. She is intensely passionate about great interior design and it shows.

I love visiting them, the flat is light and airy with nice big rooms and high ceilings. I love to see what’s new or what’s been refurbished and I especially like to see what new colour has found its way into Che’s heart. Mostly Che inspires me to try harder and reach for something more than mediocrity. If we all followed our dreams and loved what we did I think we’d all be far happier.

The above pictures are just a few I took of the various bits and bobs artfully placed in a few of the rooms and on the balcony, where I love to sit in the hanging basket and look out over the city. Hope you all enjoyed Youth Day. I sure did.

If you like the bag in the top pic, it’s a Jo Totes camera bag and retails for around R850 incl. postage. Customs and tax roughly R100.
