Heritage (Braai) Day

The 24th of September, Heritage Day, is fast approaching and even though I’m seriously bummed that it’s falling on a Saturday I’m still excited for another excuse to braai. If you’re like me and really don’t like pap and sauce or if you’ve spent too many hours in the kitchen cooking the darn stuff, krummel or otherwise, then I have a really awesome recipe for you. It’s the Spicy Tomato Couscous recipe as per June/July issue of the Donna Hay Magazine. I made it last night and I love it.

It’s got all the flavour you’ll ever need and the couscous is kinda reminiscent of krummel pap so I reckon it’s a winner.

Spicy Tomato Couscous

2 Tbsp olive oil
1 red onion, thinly sliced
2 long red chillies, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes
3.5 cups (875ml) chicken stock
sea salt and cracked black pepper
1 cup (200g) couscous (I used an extra 1/3 of a cup to make it a bit thicker)

  • Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the onion and chilli and cook, stirring for 2 minutes or until softened.
  • Add the garlic and cook for a further 30 seconds.
  • Add the tomato, stock, salt and pepper and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Add the couscous, cover with a tight-fitting lid and remove from the heat.
  • Set aside for 10 minutes.
  • Transfer to a bowl and serve immediately.

This recipe serves 4 quite generously but if you have more hungry mouths to feed then just double or treble as needed.

Rambling about Durban

Today is probably the first time I’ve seen 5am on a Saturday morning in a really, really, really long time. It’s been a really busy day. These are a few of my snaps from today. I say snaps because I didn’t really take the time to concentrate on any of the settings, bad I know. They’re all really different as I’ve been playing around with different editing and post-production methods.

On another note, I bought a lensbaby lens and accessories kit, so I get to play a lot more now. Have a good Saturday night and happy early morning wake-up tomorrow if you’re watching the rugby.

Lara Jade – Self Portraits

As any photographer know one of the best ways to improve your art is self-portraiture. Having said that however, it sure helps if you’re good looking. If you follow me on twitter or even on the blog you may think I have a bit of an obsession with Lara Jade. You’d be right. The girl’s got mad skills and she isn’t exactly hard on the eye.

In the words of her website info page:

LARA JADE is an internationally acclaimed fashion, portrait and commercial photographer.
Lara’s most compelling quality is the ability to colour her images with strong elements of romanticism, fantasy and a hint of darkness. Her unique style has defined her work since picking up her first camera at the age of fifteen, when she first started experimenting with self-portraiture and themes of fantasy which she continues to develop and refine today. At only seventeen Lara started her own business – Lara Jade Photography. Beginning by taking on small clients, she was soon able to demonstrate a strong understanding of how to develop the commercial side of her business to adequately deal with the high demand for her work. Lara’s momentum has continued to build, with industry leading brands and well known fashion and photography magazines worldwide…

Interpret Durban Design Contest

A few years ago Durban was stagnating. Nothing much was going on, people were leaving town at an alarming rate for Cape Town and London and those who were left didn’t much seem to care. Not anymore!  These days Durban is alive with possibility, the art and music scene is soaring and Durbanites are getting involved in all sorts of events.

One such event is Interpret Durban which was started by Casey and Richard of Street Scene Tours. They pretty much wanted some rad designs for their t-shirts so they created a competition, waited for the entries to pile in and used it as an excuse to party the night away while the winners were chosen. This year they’re doing it all again and they’ve added photography and video to the mix.

If you have a creative streak in you just waiting to get out then this is your chance to shine. Get designing, clicking or filming now! Submissions close 19 September 2011.

The theme for this years comp is Rediscover. Reconnect. Reveal.

The Thrift Collection Pop-up Shop

Pippa and Bevan of The Thrift Collection have bought the cutest little caravan and converted it into a traveling pop-up shop. With loads of hanging space on rails, some shelving for shoes and some really fab retro décor I think they’re on to a winner.  They launched their new venture at the Alliance Francaise in Durban on Saturday and despite some really rather miserable weather there was quite a good turnout.

If you missed it, be sure to follow The Thrift Collection on twitter (@thethriftco) for information on the next pop-up shop location.
