In that time their family has grown by two, and with Claire leaving the country soon (I’m jealous), they wanted some family pics of them all together while it’s still an option. It was a super miserable, rainy day in Durban and not ideal for photos on the beach. Luckily Moyo on the pier has a roof that overhangs most of the pier and offered some shelter from the wind and rain. We managed to snap some pics of everyone without anyone getting too wet, thank goodness. I’d like to wish Claire all the best in the US, I’m sure everyone is going to miss you loads.

World Baking Day 2013 https://cherishonline.co.za/world-baking-day-2013/ https://cherishonline.co.za/world-baking-day-2013/#comments Thu, 30 May 2013 14:07:29 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1797 Last year I looked on as people I knew on Twitter and Facebook baked their little hearts out for the Stork, I Love Baking initiative for World Baking Day 2012. This year, when Stork Baking contacted me and asked if I’d like to be involved I jumped at the chance.

My mission this year was to bake a Turkish Delight Cake, which had a rating of 22/100. Easy right!! haha, not so much. I set off to Port Edward with my box of goodies (my mom has a much bigger kitchen than me) and on the Saturday, I got my bake on. While the making of the actual cake isn’t so hard, it was the icing that threw me for a loop. I really should have stuck the cake in the fridge to help the icing set quicker, I totally forgot that tip from Donna Hay until after I was done. Oops.

In any case I had loads of fun, the cake was delicious, if a little overdone and I am definitely going to try out some of the other recipes available on the I Love Baking SA facebook page. Follow them on Twitter as well – @ILoveBakingSA

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

230g Stork Bake
280g sugar
5 extra large eggs
270g cake flour
10ml baking powder
2 drops red food colouring
7ml rosewater
75g Turkish Delight sweets, finely chopped
130g icing sugar
Sugared roses and extra Turkish Delight sweets to decorate

Method:

  1. Beat the Stork Bake until soft and creamy. In a separate bowl, beat the sugar and eggs together until thick and light.
  2. Fold the sifted flour and baking powder gently into the egg mixture. Fold the Stork Bake in.
  3. Add a drop or two of red food colouring and 5ml rosewater. Fold gently then spoon half of the mixture into a greased ring pan. Sprinkle the Turkish Delight pieces over the batter. Top with remaining batter and bake at 180ºC for about an hour until a skewer inserted comes out clean. (Side note: I would reduce the cooking time to about 45 mins max)
  4. Remove from the oven, cool, and then invert onto a cooling rack and cool completely.
  5. Sift the icing sugar and add a little warm water along with the remaining 2ml rosewater. Stir to make a spreading consistency. Add a few drops of colouring if you prefer. Drizzle over the cake and allow to run down the sides. Decorate the cake with sugared roses.

And here are some pics of what went down on my little baking mission.

Weekend in iPhone Photos https://cherishonline.co.za/weekend-in-iphone-photos/ https://cherishonline.co.za/weekend-in-iphone-photos/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 11:58:51 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1769 Ok so I’m cheating a bit as a few of these pics are from last weekend but most of them are from the last few days. What can I say about the Berg other than that it rained and rained and rained some more and I was thankful every day that I wasn’t at Splashy trying to keep mud out of my tent.

For some reason despite all the lovely long grass for them to chew on, most of the cows we encountered were either standing or sitting in the middle of the road. It made for some slightly hairy driving on some of the roads. I hope nobody hit the massive side of beef that was hanging around in the fast lane by Cato 1Stop on the N3. In any case I hope you all had a good weekend where ever you ended up. Don’t forget the I Heart Market next weekend.

xo

Cindy and Lee – Engagement Shoot https://cherishonline.co.za/cindy-and-lee-engagement-shoot/ https://cherishonline.co.za/cindy-and-lee-engagement-shoot/#comments Thu, 21 Mar 2013 13:23:58 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1747 This morning I was up way earlier than I’ve managed in the last few months. It was still dark out for crying in a bucket, but nonetheless we were all at North Beach by 5:30 for Cindy and Lee’s Engagement Shoot.

Hope you like the pics guys. x

So, apparently my intro was lacking and this is what I actually should have said:

“The magnificent engagement shoot of Lee and Cindy was an absolute breeze.. never have I seen a couple so visually stimulating… *other amazing superlatives…*”

Sorry about that Lee, I’ll try harder next time.

“PS. I’ve also realised that I have a severe preference for Landscape.

I Heart Market – Witness Article https://cherishonline.co.za/i-heart-market-witness-article/ https://cherishonline.co.za/i-heart-market-witness-article/#comments Mon, 25 Feb 2013 09:05:46 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1732 I’m such a fame whore that I get seriously over excited when people use my pics in Newspapers or Magazine articles or even Online articles. Thanks to Anna and Alexandra I got some pics in the Weekend Witness a little while back.

Baby Shower Children https://cherishonline.co.za/baby_shower_children/ https://cherishonline.co.za/baby_shower_children/#comments Sun, 24 Feb 2013 16:45:05 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1721 It’s amazing how many children you can find at a baby shower. Maybe it’s just because I’m the wrong side 30 and half the people I know already have kids, but I’m pretty happy about it because it provides great photo opportunities for me.

Angie Goes Horse Riding https://cherishonline.co.za/angie-goes-horse-riding/ https://cherishonline.co.za/angie-goes-horse-riding/#comments Sun, 17 Feb 2013 15:09:38 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1710 When Angie mentioned that she would be going horse riding this morning, I jumped at the chance to go and check it out. I love horses but I’ve never been on one and I was keen to see where she rides and what the horses are like. I was terrified of them when I was younger but I think that’s due to the sheer size of them when you’re a mere 3.5ft tall. I was convinced I was going to get kicked by one and that would be the end of me. Clearly, that never happened.

For anyone interested on getting on a horse, give Meadowridge Riding School a call on 083 653 3884 or check out their facebook page.

Durban Summer Daze https://cherishonline.co.za/durban-summer-daze/ https://cherishonline.co.za/durban-summer-daze/#comments Sun, 20 Jan 2013 07:40:14 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1657 There’s nothing better than the beachfront in Summer once the holiday season has come and gone. If you get there early enough there are no crowds and you can just enjoy the fresh air and being outdoors. I also love how Durban can be miserable and raining one day and the next it’s bright sunshine and heat you could easily do without.

It’s turned into a scorcher of a day today, so if you’re still on your way down to the beach, don’t forget the sunblock. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. x

Rainy Day Weekends https://cherishonline.co.za/rainy-day-weekends/ https://cherishonline.co.za/rainy-day-weekends/#comments Sun, 13 Jan 2013 12:22:07 +0000 Kathy https://cherishonline.co.za/?p=1631 Happy Sunday! The weather is rather miserable in Durban so we’re pretty much doing as little as possible today. Wherever you are, I hope you’re also having as much of a lazy day as we are. Enjoy the last few hours of the weekend.
